چکیده

In this paper, we explore end-to-end loss differentiation algorithms (LDAs) for use with congestion-sensitive video transport protocols for networks with either backbone or last-hop wireless links. As our basic video transport protocol, we use UDP in conjunction with a congestion control mechanism extended with an LDA. For congestion control, we use the TCP-Friendly Rate Control (TFRC) algorithm. We extend TFRC to use an LDA when a connection uses at least one wireless link in the path between the sender and receiver. We then evaluate various LDAs under different wireless network topologies, competing traffic, and fairness scenarios to determine their effectiveness. In addition to evaluating LDAs derived from previous work, we also propose and evaluate a new LDA, ZigZag, and a hybrid LDA, ZBS, that selects among base LDAs depending upon observed network conditions. We evaluate these LDAs via simulation, and find that no single base algorithm performs well across all topologies and competition. However, the hybrid algorithm performs well across topologies and competition, and in some cases exceeds the performance of the best base LDA for a given scenario. All of the LDAs are reasonably fair when competing with TCP, and their fairness among flows using the same LDA depends on the network topology. In general, ZigZag and the hybrid algorithm are the fairest among all LDAs. Keywords— wireless loss, loss differentiation, congestion control, TCP friendly rate control, video transport protocol

AED: An Accurate and Explicit Loss Differentiation Mechanism

In recent years mobile computing has experienced an explosive growth, mainly due to the integration of wireless networks with the wired Internet. To deploy bandwidth-greedy multimedia applications on such heterogeneous environments, efficient congestion control algorithms are required. In such environments, a packet can cross one or more wireless links before eventually reaching its destination...

Service Differentiation Through End-to-end Rate Control in Low Bandwidth Wireless Packet Networks

With the increased commercial deployment of wireless networks, the issue of service differentiation among flows in a wireless/wireline network is becoming important. While many wireline solutions for service differentiation depend on end-to-end rate control upon packet loss, this approach does not work well for wireless networks because packet losses do not necessarily indicate congestion in th...

RARELD for Loss Differentiation and Reduction in Wireless Network

Data communication in networking is done through exchanging the data packets between the end points. The packet loss may occur in wired/wireless network during the data transmission. Losses in wired network are caused because of congestion in routers, but losses in wireless network may occur because of interference or network congestion. The main problem in wireless network compared to wired ne...

Identification of Packet Losses in TCP Over Wired & Wireless Networks

We propose a robust end-to-end loss differentiation scheme to identify the packet losses due to congestion for TCP connections over wired/wireless networks. We use the measured RTT values in determining whether the cause of packet loss is due to congestion over wired path or regular bit errors over wireless paths. The classification should be as accurate as possible to achieve high throughput a...

TCP-Friendly Congestion Control over Wireless Networks

Abstract: In this paper, we present an end-to-end adaptation scheme, called the wireless loss-delay based adaptation algorithm (WLDA+). WLDA+ adapts the transmission behaviour of multimedia senders in accordance with the network congestion state in wireless environments. WLDA+ is based on the loss-delay based adaptation scheme [1] which adjusts the transmission behaviour of the senders in a man...
